Job Vacancy: Program Associate

The Program Associate will work with the supervisor, the People, Land and Resources Program team and other staff in support of CIEL's Sustainable Loreto Project. The region of Loreto, Peru, in the heart of the northwest Amazon, contains some of the most remote, intact, carbon-rich and biodiverse tracts of rainforest remaining in the world. The Sustainable Loreto Project supports the regional government and people of Loreto in responding to development pressures from oil extraction, palm oil plantations, dams, and logging and mining concessions with the potential to significantly impact biodiversity and the vitality of the region.
The Program Associate will work with the supervisors, and program team(s) to develop and implement strategies and activities that have been identified to achieve the objectives of the Sustainable Loreto Project and other program activities as assigned.


Location: Washington, D.C.
Salary: Commensurate w/ Experience
Term: Nine-month contract, full-time, renewable depending on funding

Programmatic Responsibilities

1. As directed by the supervisors, assist in the development of workplans and budgets, in line with and based on agreed project objectives;

2. Implement strategies and tactics to achieve goals, ensuring highest quality work products;

3. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with relevant partner organizations, agencies, intergovernmental organizations, and other NGOs to achieve CIEL's project related goals;

4. Maintain all CIEL confidences and those of our partners and clients;

5. Assist in information flow within the project and between the project and other programs, including the following;

6. Perform other job related duties as requested or assigned by supervisors.


Management and Administration

1. Meet periodically as requested, with the President, Director of Finance and Administration, Director of Development, Communications Manager, and other team members;

2. Assist in preparation of annual project and program plans, and operating budgets;

3. As directed by supervisors, assist in preparation of reports to funders, and ensure that all reports are submitted on time;

4. Maintain timesheets contemporaneously and submit them on time; and

5. Participate in weekly staff meetings and other organizational activities.


Minimum Qualifications:

1. Bachelor degree with a focus on environment, human rights, law, policy, and/or development;

2. Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously;

3. Exceptional research, writing and communication skills; demonstrated ability to write clearly and compellingly for a variety of audiences, including policy makers and the general public;

4. Experience with a variety of communication technologies and formats, including online and social media;

5. Experience working with a diverse range of people, groups, local communities, and partner organizations;

6. Ability to work both independently and in close coordination with a team;

7. Ability to travel depending on project need and funding; and

8. Proficiency in English and Spanish.
