Chemicals Program Accomplishments
CIEL fosters the adoption and development of the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs)
Through our advocacy and collaboration, in particular with the International POPs Elimination Network (IPEN), CIEL helped to develop the Stockholm Convention on POPs. CIEL has provided legal counsel and policy advice regarding the ratification of the Stockholm Convention by the United States, and the implementation of the Stockholm Convention.
CIEL Brings International Expertise To Bear in US Reform
CIEL has leveraged our international expertise on chemicals law and policy to achieve important milestones on the way to reforming the U.S. Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA).
To the debate on U.S. legal reform, we have contributed the lessons learned from Europe’s new chemicals legislation (REACH), as well as international treaties such as the Stockholm Convention on POPs.
CIEL’s expertise in international efforts on POPs has allowed us to lead U.S. efforts on POPs and Persistent Bioaccumulative and Toxic chemicals (PBTs).
CIEL Organizes Public Interest Advocates for Precaution on Nanotechnologies
CIEL has chaired the IPEN Nano Working Group, and participated in UNITAR’s Regional Awareness-Raising Workshops in developing countries. CIEL has worked closely with European partners in proposing a definition of nanotechnologies and nanomaterials to European regulators–one of the initial steps in developing a precautionary approach to these new materials in the European region.
