In testimony before Congress, CIEL calls on legislators to reject Republican proposals to amend the Toxic Substances Control Act, and to support a bill that will faithfully reflect the spirit and letter of the Stockholm POPs Convention

July 2004

On July 13, CIEL Senior Attorney Glenn Wiser testified before the House Subcommittee on Environment and Hazardous Materials on the Chair's June 17 legislative proposal for amending the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) to implement the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants. Mr. Wiser testified on behalf of CIEL plus several of our partners, including National Environmental Trust, Physicians for Social Responsibility, Oceana, Pesticide Action Network, the Sierra Club, and the U.S. Public Interest Research Group.

In his oral testimony, Mr. Wiser stated that "U.S. environmental and health organizations believe the [Chairman's] approach is fundamentally flawed, and we will work very hard to ensure that the approach is never enacted into law." He also offered several legislative alternatives that the environmental and health community believe would more faithfully reflect the requirements of the Stockholm Convention.
