CIEL provides support for Maldives submission to UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights on the effects of climate change on the full enjoyment of human rights
October 2008
In March, the UN Human Rights Council adopted by consensus a resolution, based on the Male' Declaration, calling on the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights to conduct a study into the effects of climate change on the full enjoyment of human rights, especially economic, social and cultural rights; the study will be the basis of a full Council debate on the issue during its March 2009 Session.
CIEL has worked with the Maldives Government on its submission, as well as on considering what the international community's follow-up activities should be. The conclusions of the study and the debate will be fed into the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) ongoing negotiating process.
