Climate Change Program Current Activities - World Bank Coal Funding

CIEL is working with other NGOs in an effort to get the World Bank and other international financial institutions to reduce or eliminate funding for coal based energy projects and to ramp up funding for projects that promote energy efficiency and renewable sources of energy.  A significant part of the challenge is to do so in a manner that continues to prioritize energy services for the poor.

As part of this work, CIEL is supporting the efforts of South African colleagues to file an inspection panel claim against the WB’s decision to fund the massive Eskom coal project.  In addition CIEL is contributing to efforts within the International Finance Corporation (IFC) to adopt new policies on climate change.
