CIEL and the Ninth Biennial IASCP Conference
June 2002
The Ninth Biennial Conference of the International Association of the
Study for Common Property (IASCP) held in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe from
June 17-21, 2002. The theme of the conference was "The Commons in
an Age of Globalization."
In collaboration with the Zimbabwean Environmental Law Association (ZELA),
CIEL organized a workshop on "Applying Theory on the Ground: Promoting
Legal Recognition of Community-Based Property Rights, Including Common
Property." With support from USAID and the Ford Foundation, CIEL
also assisted partners from various nations in Africa and Asia with technical
and financial assistance to assure their participation.
The 2004 biennial conference will be held in Oaxaca, Mexico. The Regional
Center for Social Science and Sustainable Development (RCSD) in Chiang
Mai, Thailand, in cooperation with IASCP is organizing a regional conference
from July 11-14, 2003 on the "The Politics of the Commons: Articulating
Development and Strengthening Local Practices." For more information
