The paper begins with an analysis of the concepts of "sustainable development" and "environmental justice." It then expounds five principles of environmental justice and explicates strong links between environmental justice and sustainable development. It further goes on to discuss three areas in international law that highlight this nexus: the right to life, including the right to a healthy environment; the traditional and customary property rights of indigenous and other local communities; and participatory and procedural rights. Finally the paper examines some obstacles to the realization of environmental justice and sustainable development, and makes some recommendations. A copy of One Species, One Planet is available in PDF format. |
