CIEL discusses environmental protection and investor-state disputes at an international seminar in Chile

On March 13, 2008, CIEL participated in an international seminar on "The Protection of the Environment on the International Commerce and Investment Dispute Settlement Systems," held at the Universidad Diego Portales Law School.

Co-organized by the Centro Jurídico ILC and the Diego Portales Law School, the seminar was also sponsored by the Chilean National Commission for the Environment, or Comisión Nacional del Medio Ambiente (CONAMA); Chile's General Directorate for Internacional Economic Affaire, or Dirección General de Relaciones Económicas Internacionales del Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores de Chile, (DIRECON); the FUNDACIÓN PRO BONO; and the Nacional Center of Arbitration, or Centro Nacional de Arbitraje (CNA).

CIEL discussed investor-state dispute settlement mechanisms, focusing on environmental cases at the International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID). Speakers included: Ester Valenuela, Dean (I) of the Diego Portales Law School; Esteban Tomic, President of CJILC; Professor David A. Gantz of the University of Arizona; Alvaro Espinoza, Chief of Sub Department of Commercial Controversies, DIRECON; and Marie-Claude Plumer of the Law Department of CONAMA.
