PREPARING FOR THE 2002 WORLD SUMMIT
ON SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

In preparation for the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD), UNEP's Regional Office for North America (RONA), in cooperation with the Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL), is seeking comments and inputs relating to International Environmental Governance (IEG).

Your comments and inputs are sought on the following reports:

  • The Executive Director's report on International Environmental
    Governance submitted to the Open-Ended Intergovernmental Group of Ministers
    or their Representatives on International Environmental Governance, First
    Meeting held in New York on 18 April 2001;
  • The report on the Civil Society Consultations on International
    Environmental Governance held Nairobi, Kenya on 22 / 23 May 2001;
  • The report on the Expert consultations on International Environmental
    Governance held in Cambridge, United Kingdom on 28 / 29 May 2001.

The consultations will run over a four-month period, beginning August 01 and ending November 30, 2001. Stakeholders' comments can focus on any aspect of IEG. The comments or any other additional documentation will be summarized by CIEL at regular intervals to further discussion. These updates will be made available electronically to those who are interested.

CIEL will prepare a report summarizing received comments and ideas, which RONA will feed into the IEG ministerial process in preparation for the September 24 / 25 ECE Regional Meeting for the WSSD and the December 01 Open-Ended Intergovernmental Group of Ministers Meeting in Montreal.
