CIEL Statement on Subpoenas Announced Today by Rep. Lamar Smith

For Immediate Release:
July 13, 2016

Today, Representative Lamar Smith, Chairman of the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology announced that he has issued subpoenas against 2 State Attorneys General and 8 non-governmental organizations involved in the ongoing and vital investigations into the role of Exxon and other oil companies in climate deception campaigns.

Carroll Muffett, President, Center for International Environmental Law, issued the following statement in response to the announcement:

“In light of Chairman Lamar Smith’s history of witch hunts against climate science and scientists, today’s announcement is as predictable as it is ironic. But this should not distract from the gravity of what Smith and his cohort have done.  Confronted with mounting evidence that Exxon and other oil companies may have perpetrated a massive climate fraud on the American people–and the world–Chairman Smith has chosen not just to ignore that evidence, but to actively suppress it.  His abuse of the Congressional subpoena power is a bald effort to intimidate and coerce those who would bring the truth to light.  It will not succeed.”
