Advisory: Risks to Climate and Communities from Gulf Coast CCS

CIEL President to testify on the risks and impacts of carbon capture and storage along the US Gulf Coast during upcoming House Subcommittee hearing

Washington, DC — Tomorrow morning, the Center for International Environmental Law will provide expert testimony on the profound limits and growing risks of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) before the House Subcommittee on Energy and Mineral Resources. The hearing, “The Opportunities and Risks of Offshore Carbon Storage in the Gulf of Mexico,” will include CIEL President Carroll Muffett, alongside witnesses from the Gulf Coast Carbon Center, Environmental Defense Fund, and the National Ocean Industries Association.

Muffett’s testimony will address the limited potential, high costs, and history of failures of CCS, and how the false promise of CCS threatens to entrench fossil fuels and slow the transition to clean and renewable energy. Muffett will highlight the growing health and environmental risks of CCS to frontline and fenceline communities, which fall disproportionately on communities of color. Finally, he will discuss how proposed offshore carbon dioxide storage in the Gulf of Mexico could increase the risks of environmental harm.
