CIEL Applauds New International Effort to Combat Plastic Pollution

Launch of Group of Friends to Combat Marine Plastic is a Meaningful Step Toward a Global Treaty

Geneva–The following is a statement from Andrés Del Castillo, Senior Attorney, Environmental Health Program at the Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL) on today’s launch of the Group of Friends to Combat Marine Plastic:

“Plastic is now an indelible part of life on earth, occupying the Marianas Trench to Mount Everest, and everything in between. Its durability and resistance to degradation allow it to accumulate in waterways, food, drinking water, and in the bodies of both humans and animals. For years, CIEL has called for common-sense, comprehensive solutions to address the entire lifecycle of plastic.”

“In that spirit, we applaud the launch of the Group of Friends to Combat Marine Plastic, and we especially welcome the inclusion of stakeholders in the process. The Group of Friends provides an opportunity to build support for a global plastic solution and serves as a meaningful next step for governments and stakeholders to come together on the road to a plastic convention. CIEL looks forward to engaging with members at every level in the years ahead.”
