CIEL Expert Availability at the UN Negotiations on the Sound Management of Chemicals and Waste in Geneva

Center for International Environmental Law Experts Will Be Attending the United Nations Triple Conferences of the Parties to the Basel, Rotterdam, and Stockholm Conventions in Geneva

GENEVA, CH, June 3rd, 2022 – Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL) experts will be attending the upcoming United Nations chemicals and waste negotiations at the Triple Conferences of the Parties of the Basel, Rotterdam, and Stockholm Conventions (BRS COPs) in Geneva, Switzerland, from June 6th to June 17th, 2022. Staff will be available for comment before, during, and after the conferences.

CIEL experts will closely follow negotiations, tracking progress towards sound management of chemicals and waste. Together with partners, they will focus on achieving outcomes that aim to ban highly toxic chemicals (in particular PFHxS — a synthetic chemical that harms human health and builds up in the environment and the body over time), regulate the levels of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in waste, and control the transboundary movements of hazardous plastic wastes.

Experts will be monitoring negotiations during the BRS COPs to ensure that countries do not undermine the scientific process of the Conventions by including unjustified exemptions to the bans, and that any conclusions reached do not come at the expense of human rights, health, the environment, or ambition.

Additionally, CIEL staff will be available to discuss the links between discussions at BRS and the negotiations on an international agreement to end plastic pollution, and they will be closely monitoring public participation throughout negotiations.
