CIEL Experts at the UN Negotiations on the Sound Management of Chemicals and Waste in Geneva

Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL) Experts Track the UN Triple Conferences of the Parties to the Basel, Rotterdam, and Stockholm Conventions

May 1st, 2023

GENEVA (CH) – CIEL experts are participating in and tracking the United Nations chemicals and waste negotiations at the Triple Conferences of the Parties of the Basel, Rotterdam, and Stockholm Conventions (BRS COPs) in Geneva, from May 1-12th, 2023, and closely monitoring progress towards sound management of chemicals and waste.

During these conferences, where more than 190 nations are represented, a majority of countries work towards better regulations, while some groups attempt to undermine key bans and controls, arguing for unjustified exemptions, and putting human health, human rights, and the environment at risk.

Together with partners, CIEL experts at the negotiations focus on:

  • Banning the production and use of highly toxic chemicals, in particular, those used in plastics: UV stabilizer UV-328 and flame retardant Dechlorane plus
  • Promoting improved regulations for persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in waste
  • Promoting better controls of the transboundary movements of hazardous plastic waste.
  • Empowering countries to receive information on chemicals and decide whether they want to import them
  • Monitoring coordination with the negotiations of an international treaty to end plastic pollution due to resume on May 29th in Paris, France.
