CIEL Statement on US Court’s Dismissal of Exxon’s Lawsuit to Stop Climate Change Investigations

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 30, 2018

On Thursday, a federal judge dismissed a case by Exxon Mobil against the Attorneys General of Massachusetts and New York, who are investigating whether the company misled investors and the public on climate change and the dangers of its products.

CIEL President Carroll Muffett, one of several lawyers, investigators, and activists subpoenaed by Exxon in this case, issued the following statement:

“Yet again, a court has held that the contrast between Exxon’s knowledge of climate risk and its public statements about those risks can and should be investigated. This latest in a long series of stinging legal defeats demonstrates that Exxon’s continued attempts to avoid legal accountability for its actions are not only extraordinary and unfounded—they are almost certain to fail.”
