CIEL Welcomes Lili Fuhr as Climate and Energy Deputy Director

GENEVA, CH, June 1st, 2022, — The Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL) welcomes Lili Fuhr as Deputy Director of the Climate and Energy Program. Lili brings more than fifteen years of experience working in the fields of international environmental and climate policy, having devoted her career to protecting the planet and advancing economic and social justice through a human rights-based approach. She will join CIEL’s Climate and Energy Program to support the director in leading a growing team of dedicated attorneys, researchers, and campaigners working to accelerate the transition to a fossil-free future, hold states and corporations accountable for their contributions to the climate crisis, and center human rights in solutions to it. Lili will support the team’s work in a variety of areas, including our efforts to expose the risks and impacts of geoengineering and other false climate solutions, and halt the expansion of petrochemicals.

To confront the existential threats facing people and our planet, we constantly need to innovate and develop smarter, more strategic, and more equitable ways of working, co-powering frontline and fenceline communities and strengthening international collaboration. I cannot imagine a better partner in that effort than Lili,” said Nikki Reisch, Director of CIEL’s Climate & Energy. “I am extremely excited that Lili is joining us, bringing with her a wealth of strategic skills that will be crucial to the team’s continued growth and impact,“ she added.

Having worked closely with CIEL and valued its incisive legal strategies and movement-powering analysis, I am truly looking forward to joining their Climate & Energy team,” said Lili. “I am eager to build on CIEL’s 30 years of leadership linking human rights and environmental law to advance advocacy strategies, address the root cause of the climate crisis, fight false climate solutions, and support a just human rights-centered transition to a fossil-free world,” she added. “The growing climate and environmental movement is stronger and more diverse every day, and I am honored to join CIEL to help that movement grow even stronger.”

From her early and pathbreaking support of the climate justice movement to the global fights against oil, gas, and plastics expansion to her leadership on the emerging threat of geoengineering, Lili has proven herself a trusted partner, a gifted strategist, and a committed advocate for systemic change. Her addition will make an already strong team even stronger and help us accelerate and scale up CIEL’s vital work to confront the intersecting planetary crises we all face,” said Carroll Muffett, CIEL’s CEO and President.

Lili Fuhr comes to CIEL from her role as Head of the International Environmental Policy Division of the Heinrich Böll Foundation, where she worked with a broad spectrum of members of the global environmental justice community on international climate and resource governance, and corporate accountability. Lili has been a board member of the ETC Group since 2015 and a founding board member of the Climate Justice Fund since 2017.

This week, Lili will be attending Stockholm+50, an international meeting in Stockholm (Sweden) convened by the United Nations General Assembly to commemorate the 1972 United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, which made the environment a pressing global issue for the first time. Lili will be available for comment before, during, and after the meeting.
