Washington, DC — In the wake of today’s attack on the United States Congress, CIEL President Carroll Muffett issued the following statement.
Donald John Trump poses a clear and present danger to public safety, democracy, constitutional order, and the rule of law in the United States. His repeated incitements to violence and anti-democratic conduct led directly and inexorably to today’s unprecedented and clearly premeditated attack on the US Congress, state capitols, and the democratic process. His continued incitement in the wake of the attack is an ongoing abuse of the power of the Presidency, and it demonstrates beyond a reasonable doubt that he is unfit to remain in office and must be disabled from using his current position to retain power.
Congress should immediately institute impeachment proceedings to remove him from office and ensure he is permanently barred from holding any public office in the future. More immediately, the Vice President and remaining cabinet members have an urgent constitutional obligation to declare Trump unfit to serve the short remainder of his term in accordance with the 25th Amendment.
But Donald Trump did not act alone in spurring today’s attacks. He has been aided and abetted by numerous officeholders at the federal and state levels who carried out a months-long campaign to interfere with the presidential election, disenfranchise millions of voters, and undermine the lawful outcome of the democratic process. By intent and effect, this conduct has disproportionately targeted and affected Black and Brown communities across the country; and it jeopardizes all of us, regardless of ethnicity or political party.
No democracy can long survive when so many people vested with the public trust are working to undermine it. Congressional ethics committees and relevant bar associations should conduct a sustained and serious inquiry into the role and responsibilities of others within and outside Congress who created the atmosphere and the opportunity in which these attacks occurred.
The stark contrast between the muted police response to today’s attacks and the repeated official violence against peaceful Black Lives Matter protestors last summer lays bare the racist double-standard that bars true equality under the law and demonstrates the urgent need to transform policing in the United States.
And the ugly trajectory of the 2020 election, culminating with the grave and shameful events today, should spark a national dialogue — and national action — to finally make the fundamental principles of the rule of law, free and fair elections, and one person one vote a reality, for everyone.

Washington, DC — Tras el ataque de hoy al Congreso de los Estados Unidos, el Presidente de CIEL Carroll Muffett emitió la siguiente declaración.
Donald John Trump figura un peligro claro y presente a la seguridad pública, la democracia, el orden constitucional y el estado de derecho en los Estados Unidos. Su repetida incitación a la violencia y conducta anti-democrática llevaron directa e inevitablemente al ataque sin precedentes pero claramente premeditado en el Congreso de los Estados Unidos, capitales de estados, así como el proceso democrático en sí. Su continua provocación después del ataque es un constante abuso de poder desde la Presidencia, y demuestra sin lugar a duda que no está capacitado para permanecer en el cargo y debe ser inhabilitado de usar su posición actual para retener el poder.
El Congreso debe instituir inmediatamente un proceso de destitución para removerlo de su cargo y asegurar que se le prohíba ocupar cualquier puesto público a futuro. Con mayor inmediatez, el Vicepresidente y los miembros del gabinete restantes tienen una urgente obligación constitucional de declarar a Trump no apto para servir el resto de su corto mandato de acuerdo con la Enmienda Número 25.
Pero Donald Trump no actuó solo para provocar los ataques de hoy. Fue ayudado e instigado por múltiples funcionarios a nivel federal y estatal quienes llevaron a cabo una campaña de meses para interferir en la elección presidencial, privar a millones del derecho a voto, y socavar el resultado legítimo del proceso democrático. Por intención y efecto, esta conducta se ha dirigido y afectado de manera desproporcionada a comunidades negras y morenas a lo largo del país; y nos pone en riesgo a todos, independientemente de etnicidad o partido político.
Ninguna democracia puede sobrevivir por mucho tiempo cuando tantas personas conferidas con tutelar el interés público están trabajando para socavarlo. Los comités de ética del Congreso y colegios de abogados relevantes deberán realizar una investigación sostenida y seria del rol y responsabilidades de otros dentro y fuera del Congreso quienes crearon el ambiente y la oportunidad para que estos ataques fueran posibles.
El duro contraste entre la respuesta tenue de la policía y la repetida violencia oficial en contra de las protestas pacíficas de Black Lives Matter el verano pasado pone al desnudo el doble estándar racista que prohíbe la verdadera igualdad ante la ley y demuestra la urgente necesidad de transformar a la policía en los Estados Unidos.
Y la horrible trayectoria de la elección del 2020, culminando con los graves y vergonzosos eventos del día de hoy, deben estallar un diálogo nacional — y acción nacional — para lograr que los principios fundamentales del estado de derecho, elecciones libres y justas, y el una persona un voto se hagan realidad, para todos.
