CIEL Vacancy Announcement: Staff Attorney – Climate & Energy and Environmental Health Programs

August 2019

The Center for International Environmental Law is seeking a passionate lawyer and experienced advocate as a Staff Attorney contributing to the work of its Climate & Energy Program (CE) and Environmental Health Program (EH).

This is a great opportunity for an energetic individual with knowledge of current human rights issues and environmental challenges to support the campaigns undertaken by both programs.

The C&E program works to accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels and place people at the center of climate policies. CIEL’s EH program works to strengthen regulation of toxic substances and protect communities and families worldwide from toxic risks. Both programs are active in global efforts to confront the plastic crisis.

The Staff Attorney position requires: familiarity with the linkages between human rights and climate change and familiarity with the sources and impacts of plastic pollution. The Staff Attorney will also have impeccable writing skills in English. Experience within multilateral environmental negotiations and experience working with civil society networks are strongly preferred.

The position is based in Geneva (Switzerland), and requires periodic international travel. A complete position description is available here. Salary is commensurate with experience.

The position is for 6 months starting late September/early October 2019 through March. The position may be extended subject to the availability of resources.

To Apply: Please send a resume, cover letter, one or two references, and a writing sample to info@ciel.org (include “CE/EH Staff Attorney” in subject line). The writing sample should represent the applicant’s own, unedited writing. Note that CIEL does not sponsor visas of any kind. You must have authorization to work in Switzerland in order to be considered for this position.

Application Deadline: Accepted on a rolling basis. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. The first interviews are expected to be conducted during the week of the 26th August 2019.
