CIEL Welcomes Three New Members to its Board of Trustees

WASHINGTON, November 4, 2025 — The Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL), a global leader in using the power of law to protect the environment and advance human rights, is pleased to announce the onboarding of three new members to its Board of Trustees: Santiago Canton, Raji Kalra and Katrina Anderson. Together, they bring additional leadership on international law, philanthropy, and finance essential to CIEL’s next chapter. Following the appointment of President and CEO Rebecca Brown in March 2025, these additions are a milestone in CIEL’s ability to steward mission, strategy, and impact across its programs and partnerships.

Santiago Canton is Secretary General of the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ). An Argentine jurist, Canton has an extensive career advancing human rights, the rule of law, and democracy, including service as Executive Secretary of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights and as the first Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression in the Inter-American System. His work spans leadership roles in international organizations, academia, and civil society.

Raji Kalra is a chief executive, board director, and senior finance and operations leader who has served as Chief Financial and Administrative Officer for multiple organizations since 2007. Kalra brings nearly two decades of nonprofit leadership experience across finance, operations, governance, and risk management, with prior roles at organizations including Action Against Hunger, the International Refugee Assistance Project, and the Center for Reproductive Rights, alongside experience in the private sector.

Katrina Anderson is Director of Philanthropic Field Engagement at the Global Philanthropy Project, where she leads efforts to strengthen and expand philanthropic support for LGBTI movements in the Global South and East. A queer feminist activist, researcher, human rights advocate, and philanthropic advisor, Anderson brings 25 years of experience advancing intersectional gender justice. With a foundation in international human rights law, she has led policy advocacy reform efforts and developed philanthropic strategies centering equity and justice.

These appointments build on the steadfast leadership of CIEL’s current Board of Trustees, whose dedicated service and partnership has guided the organization through periods of growth and complexity. The expanded Board of Trustees strengthens CIEL’s ability to steward mission, strategy, and impact across its programs and partnerships. With offices in Washington, DC and Geneva, Switzerland, CIEL’s 70 staff members work across three core programs — Climate & Energy, Fossil Economy, and Environmental Health — alongside communications, development, and administrative departments. While primarily based in Geneva and Washington, staff also work remotely across the United States, Europe, and Latin America.
